Common Questions
Why should I consider an insertable cardiac monitor?
While some causes of unexplained fainting are harmless, others may be serious. Heart-related causes, including abnormal heart rhythms, are among the most serious causes of fainting. By looking at your heart rhythms before, during, and after a fainting spell, your doctor can identify whether the cause of your unexplained fainting is heart-related. The Reveal® Insertable Cardiac Monitor provides additional information over a longer period of time to help your doctor determine if your fainting stems from an abnormal heart rhythm.
What are the advantages of getting an insertable cardiac monitor (ICM) over another heart monitoring device?
Other types of heart monitors are attached on the outside of your body for 2 to 60 days. The ICM is designed for long-term use. Because the cardiac monitor is placed under the skin, you do not have to use sticky recording pads on your body or worry about connecting any wires. It can be used for up to 3 years, so it increases the chance of capturing your heart signal during infrequent fainting spells.
How does an ICM work?
The Reveal ICM monitors your heart’s activity in the form of an electrocardiogram (ECG).
- The insertable cardiac monitor automatically records abnormal heart rhythms, even if you sleep through them.
- When a fainting spell occurs, you or your family member place a small hand-held activator over the cardiac monitor and press a button.
- This triggers the device to record the heart’s signal before, during, and after the unexplained fainting spell and identifies the episode on your electronic heart record.
- Your doctor can download information from the ICM to determine if your symptoms are caused by an irregular heartbeat.
